Which English Proficiency Exam Is Actually Easier?

We are going to talk about only three exams as these are the ones that are widely accepted. There is no universally “easier” exam. It depends on your individual strengths. But here is an honest breakdown based on what we observe with Preplish students:

IELTS

IELTS is generally considered more straightforward in terms of task clarity. You know exactly what you need to do in each section. The challenge is the time pressure, particularly in Reading, and the face-to-face Speaking test which some candidates find nerve-wracking.

PTE

It has a steeper learning curve because the task types are unusual and the interface takes getting used to. However, once students master the format, many find it more predictable and fair than IELTS. The automated scoring removes the human variable entirely, which some candidates prefer.

OET

This exam is the most manageable for healthcare professionals who have strong clinical English already. If you can write a professional letter and conduct a patient consultation in English, you are already doing the hardest OET tasks in your daily work. The challenge is learning the specific format and style the exam requires.

Making Your Final Decision

Here is a simple framework:

  1. Check what your target organisation actually accepts: Don’t assume — look it up on the official website of the university, visa authority, or regulatory body. Some only accept specific exams or specific versions.
  2. Consider your profession: If you work in healthcare, OET deserves serious consideration regardless of cost.
  3. Consider your learning style: If you perform better under human interaction, IELTS Speaking may suit you. If you prefer the consistency of machine scoring, PTE is worth exploring.
  4. Take a diagnostic test for each: Before committing, try a free practice test in IELTS, PTE, and OET format to get a feel for which comes most naturally to you.
